What it is for
An animal head carries an expression a viewer reads instantly and without judgement, and a human body carries a gesture. Putting them together gets both, which is why the tradition has outlived every style it was drawn in.
How it works
The body follows a human plan, upright and built from circles, with a round belly and short limbs. The species lives in three or four signals: ear shape, snout, tail, markings. Hands usually have four fingers. A lighter belly patch is almost always there, because it separates the front of the figure from the back.
When to use it
Use it for children's work, brand characters and comedy. Avoid it for realism, because the whole construction depends on not looking at an animal too closely.

What goes wrong
A realistic animal standing on two legs comes back, which is unsettling. Cut the species down to three or four signals and build the body from circles.

realistic anatomy, fur detail, four legged posture, a photographic animal, a fearsome expression
Watch for
Three or four species signals, no more. A fully accurate animal on a human body reads as unsettling, and reducing it to the ears, the snout and the tail is what makes it read as a character.
