What it is for
Suprematism is the purest abstraction in this catalogue. There is nothing to decode, so the composition alone has to hold the eye.
On a poster that reads as serious and slightly severe, and it makes a small amount of information look important.
How it works
Float the shapes. No ground line, no horizon, no frame. They sit in white as though in space.
Tilt everything off the horizontal and vertical. One large shape dominates and thin bars cross at contrasting angles.
Palette is black, red and one blue on pure white. Type is small, condensed sans, aligned to the angle of a bar rather than to the page.
When to use it
Use it for a gallery, a contemporary music concert, a design talk, an architecture event, a film season.
Leave it alone when you need to be liked. It is austere and does not explain itself.
Told apart from its neighbours
Constructivism takes the same shapes and puts them to work with photography and a message. Suprematism refuses to mean anything.
De Stijl locks the shapes to horizontal and vertical. Suprematism tilts them and lets them float.
Concrete Art comes later and builds its shapes from a stated mathematical system.
Where it was used
Kazimir Malevich showed Black Square at the Last Futurist Exhibition in Petrograd in 1915, hung across a corner where an icon would go. El Lissitzky's Proun works from 1919 onward are the bridge from this to Constructivist graphic design.

What goes wrong
The model returns shapes sitting on a baseline. Say the shapes float freely on pure white with no ground and no horizon.
The second failure is too many colours. Ask for black, red and one blue on white only.

Watch for
The shapes float. Give them a baseline or a ground and it turns into De Stijl.
