What it is for
Graffiti reads as unsanctioned, and unsanctioned reads as real. A poster in this style promises an event that is not run by the council even when it is.
The letterforms also carry a lot of information about the subculture. Wildstyle, bubble and stencil each say something different about who the night is for.
How it works
Put it on a wall. Weathered concrete or brick, with the surface texture showing through the paint, is half the effect.
Build the letters from interlocking forms with arrows, 3D extensions, a hard black outline and a white highlight. Chrome fill with electric blue is the classic.
Add drips, soft overspray halos and a stencilled figure in flat black. Torn paste-up edges at the corners tie it to the street rather than to a gallery.
When to use it
Use it for a hip hop night, a skate event, a youth project, a street food market, a mural festival, a club.
Leave it alone for a formal or municipal event. The style is specifically about not having permission.
Told apart from its neighbours
Skateboard graphics are printed on a deck and lean on illustration and a logo rather than letterforms.
80s hip hop flyers are photocopied and typographic, not sprayed.
Stencil art, the Banksy end, is a subset: one colour, sharp edges, a joke.

Where it was used
New York subway writers built wildstyle through the 1970s, with Dondi White among the most copied. Keith Haring drew in chalk on blank subway advertising panels from 1980, and Banksy took the stencil branch worldwide from the late 1990s.

What goes wrong
The model returns a clean graffiti-style font on white. Say the whole design is sprayed on a weathered concrete wall with the texture showing through.
The second failure is no drips. Ask for visible drips, soft overspray halos and a hard black outline with a white highlight.
Leave out
clean vector edges, white paper background, neat alignment, digital gloss
Watch for
The wall matters as much as the paint. On white paper it reads as a font, not as graffiti.
