Shoulder Level

A few inches below the eyes changes very little and still changes something. The subject gains a small amount of stature and the frame keeps the shoulders as a base under the head.

It is the height most portrait and interview work quietly settles on, because a camera exactly at eye height can make a face look flat while a slightly lower one gives the jaw an edge.

The lens sits at shoulder height, roughly four to six inches under the eyes on a standing adult, and tilts up by a degree or two to keep the head centred.

The tilt is what does the work. At this height the shoulders sit fractionally closer to the lens than the face, so the body reads as a foundation rather than as something hanging off the neck.

Use it for interviews, presenters, and any single where you want a face to look solid without the frame claiming anything.

Skip it when the difference has to be visible. If the audience is meant to notice that the camera is looking up, a real low angle is the tool.

Eye level sits four to six inches higher with no upward look at all. Shoulder level adds a slight one, and on a static frame the two are hard to separate.

The difference shows in the neck and the background. A shoulder level frame shows a little more underside of the jaw and a little more of what is above the subject.

Models round this to eye level, every time, because the gap between them is smaller than the language they were trained on. State the height in inches or state it as shoulder height with a slight upward look.

The second failure is an overcorrection into a low angle. Say very slight, or a couple of degrees, so the tilt stays small.
