Incline

The ground itself runs at an angle through the frame while the camera stays honest. Hills, stairs, ramps and banked roads give a picture a diagonal that is really there.

That diagonal carries direction. A figure walking up a slope is working, and a figure walking down one is being carried, and neither reading needs a line of dialogue.

The camera sits on the slope with the horizon level, so the ground line runs diagonally across the frame and the verticals in the shot stay vertical.

Trees, poles and standing people are the proof. On real terrain they stay upright while the ground slants under them. If they lean with the ground, the camera has been canted instead.

Where the camera sits on the slope changes the shot. Below the subject and the incline adds to a low angle. Above and it steepens a high one.

Use it for landscape, for chases on hills and stairs, and for any scene where effort or descent is part of the story.

Skip it when the diagonal has no meaning. A slanted ground line in a scene about nothing reads as an accident.

A dutch angle rolls the camera and takes the horizon with it, so everything upright in the frame leans. An incline leaves the camera level and lets the ground do the leaning.

Look at the trees and the doorframes. Upright means an incline. Leaning means a dutch angle.

Models cant the camera, because a diagonal ground line and a rolled frame look similar in a still. Say the ground is sloped and the camera is level, and add that vertical objects stay vertical.

The second failure is a flat plane with a painted-on slope. Name the terrain: a hillside, a ramp, a flight of stairs, a banked road.
