Set Transition

The camera keeps moving and the world changes around it. A wall slides away, a room becomes a street, a season turns, and no cut ever happens.

Because the shot is continuous, the audience reads the change as one place transforming rather than as two places joined. That is a different claim from any cut, and a much stranger one.

On a stage it is built with flown walls, revolves and set pieces moved on cue while the camera travels. In camera it depends on the move covering the changeover.

This is the one transition in this group a model can produce in a single run, because it is one unbroken shot. Describe the camera move, the starting place and the arriving place, and say that no cut happens.

Keep the camera moving throughout. A static frame with the set changing behind it reads as a visual effect, and the movement is what makes the change feel physical.

Use it for a passage of time in one location, for a memory that takes over the present, and for any moment where two places should feel like one.

Avoid it where the audience needs to believe in a real location. The device is openly theatrical, so it fights documentary and naturalism.

An invisible cut hides a real join inside a full frame moment. A set transition has no join to hide, because the whole thing is one shot.

The test is whether a cut exists. If the footage was assembled from two takes, it is an invisible cut, however smooth it looks.

The model cuts, and the result is two shots rather than one continuous change. Say the shot is unbroken, with no cut, and that the surroundings change while the camera keeps travelling.

The second failure is a still camera. Ask for a specific move, such as a slow dolly past the subject, or the change reads as an effect laid over a fixed frame.
