Timelapse Landscape

The sky runs and the land holds. Cloud pours over a ridge, light sweeps a valley, and the terrain underneath never shifts by a pixel.

The stillness of the land is what makes the sky read as fast. Without a fixed mass in the lower half of the frame the movement has nothing to be measured against.

A locked camera, an interval matched to the cloud, and a long enough run to get real travel across the sky. One to three seconds between frames suits most weather. Slow high cloud can take longer.

Composition carries more weight than usual because nothing in the lower half will change. A ridge line, a lone tree or a road gives the still half something to be.

Light changes across a long run, so the exposure has to be ramped between frames or the sequence flickers. Sunrise and sunset are the hardest and the most rewarding for this reason.

Use it to open on a place, to mark a day passing, and to give a sequence a breath between scenes.

Skip it in flat light under an empty sky. With no cloud there is nothing to compress, and the result is an expensive still.

A general time-lapse can be anything: a street, a factory, a flower. The landscape version fixes the subject as terrain and gives all the movement to the sky and the light.

If people or traffic carry the motion, the shot belongs to one of the other time-lapse entries rather than this one.

The sky comes back static, which turns the whole shot into a still image. Name what moves up there: cloud racing, a shadow front crossing the valley, light sweeping the slope.

The second failure is a drifting camera. Say the frame is locked and the land holds completely still, or the terrain slides and the effect collapses.
