People compress into streaks and the building around them stays sharp. Individuals disappear and what is left is the shape of the traffic they make.

It is the clearest way a shot can say that a place outlasts the people in it. Nobody in the frame is identifiable, and the architecture is unchanged at the end.

A locked camera on a fixed structure, with an interval short enough that the crowd blurs rather than jumps. Half a second to two seconds suits pedestrian traffic.

The structure is the anchor. A concourse, a staircase, a station hall or a crossing gives the streaks an edge to run against, and without one the frame reads as noise.

A slightly longer exposure per frame helps the people smear rather than stroboscope. Sharp figures at this interval look like a crowd stuttering, which is a different and less useful effect.

Use it on stations, markets, crossings and lobbies, and on any beat about a system rather than a person.

Skip it when somebody in the crowd matters. This treatment erases everyone by design.

Frozen in motion stops the crowd and leaves one person moving through it. A human time-lapse does the reverse: the crowd is all movement and the building is what stands still.

If one figure is sharp while the crowd streaks, the shot is a glamour time-lapse rather than this one.

Koyaanisqatsi (1982) runs escalators, concourses and pavements at a compression where nobody stays a person, and the crowds move like fluid through fixed architecture.

The people come back sharp and the shot reads as an ordinary crowd. Say the people reduce to moving streaks and ask for a long enough exposure to smear them.

The second failure is a frame with no fixed structure. Name the architecture the streaks run against, such as a station hall or a set of stairs.
