Timelapse Glam

One person stays sharp and nearly still while the world races behind them. The contrast makes the subject the only fixed thing in a moving picture.

It reads as importance without a single word. Everything else is passing through and this person is not, which is why the format attaches so easily to fashion and portraiture.

The subject holds a pose, the camera is locked, and the background is compressed. In camera this means a long sequence with the subject staying put, and the small movements they cannot help become part of the look.

Light doing the travelling is what sells it. A sun moving across a face, or a sky changing colour behind a head, tells the audience time has passed without anything else having to.

A slight sharpness difference helps. The subject rendered cleanly against a smeared background separates the two layers immediately.

Use it for fashion, for portrait films, and for a title card that has to hold a face while the day moves.

Skip it when the subject has to act. A performance needs time to develop and this format has removed it.

A plain time-lapse compresses everything in the frame, people included. This version protects one figure from the compression.

A human time-lapse does the opposite again, streaking the people and keeping the building. The question is always which layer is allowed to stay sharp.

The subject streaks along with everything else. Say the subject stays sharp and nearly still while the background races, and state that they are the only thing in focus.

The second failure is a moving camera, which breaks the separation between the two layers. Lock the frame and say so.
