What it is for
A camera blurs what moves, so a drawing has no equivalent and had to invent one. Straight lines behind a sharp figure say fast without sacrificing the drawing, which is why they read better than blur in a still picture.
How it works
Parallel straight lines fill the background, running along the direction of travel and often converging on a point behind the subject. The figure stays entirely sharp. A few lines cross the trailing edge of the body so the two layers connect.
When to use it
Use it whenever something has to look fast in a still frame. Avoid it in a picture that also wants atmosphere, because the lines replace the background completely.

What goes wrong
A blurred photograph of a moving figure comes back. Ban motion blur by name and ask for the character to stay completely in focus.

Watch for
The figure stays sharp. Motion blur and speed lines are two different answers to the same problem, and a model will add blur unless it is banned by name.
