Does it work as a still image?

Yes. It is one drawing, and it was always one drawing. In a sequence it flashes past; on a page it reads as a deliberate graphic choice.

Should it be black on white or white on black?

Either. White figure on black reads as a flash of light; black on white reads as a shadow thrown. Pick one and ban the midtones between them.

Why is the anatomy wrong on purpose?

What it is for

A single frame with no midtones is violence to the eye. It arrives a fraction before the viewer can read it, which is exactly what a punch should do, and it works in a still for the same reason a camera flash works.

How it works

Everything is thrown away except the silhouette. The figure becomes white against black, or black against white, with no value in between. Anatomy is stretched far past what is correct. Straight lines radiate from the point of contact, and the edges are left rough.

When to use it

Use it for a poster, a thumbnail or a cover that has to stop somebody scrolling. Avoid it for anything that has to be read slowly, because the style deliberately removes all the information.
