What it is for
Watercolour is the only common paint that cannot go lighter. Every highlight has to be planned and left alone, which forces a painter to decide where the light is before the first mark, and that discipline is visible in every good watercolour.
How it works
Transparent washes are laid on damp paper so they bleed and feather. Where a wash dries at its own edge it leaves a hard bloom. Pigment granulates into the tooth of rough paper. Layers darken where they overlap. The paper stays bare wherever the picture is lightest.
When to use it
Use it for softness, nature and anything that should feel handled rather than produced. Avoid it where a flat even area is needed, because watercolour will not lie flat.
Told apart from its neighbours
Ink Wash uses one colour and values rather than hue. Gouache Flat is the opaque cousin and can be painted light over dark. Concept Painting is digital and has no paper behaviour at all.

The paper is the light. Ask for the white to be left bare, because a model reaches for white paint to make a highlight and that is the one thing watercolour cannot do.
