What it is for
Removing colour removes half the decisions and doubles the weight of the rest. A picture built only from how dark and how wet a mark is has nowhere to hide, which is why the tradition prizes economy over description.
How it works
One ink is diluted to a range of strengths. A loaded soft brush makes strokes that begin dark and run dry. Large pale areas sit beside small full black ones. The paper carries the lightest passages. Absorbent paper softens every edge slightly.
When to use it
Use it for calm, restraint and anything that should look considered. Avoid it where colour carries the message, because there is none.
Told apart from its neighbours
Watercolour Bleed uses hue as well as value. Charcoal is dry and can be lifted or erased. Shonen Ink is a comic tradition with solid blacks and a tapering line rather than dilute washes.

What goes wrong
A grey digital painting comes back with even tone. Ask for a small number of confident strokes, each starting dark and running dry, with the paper left white.

Watch for
Few strokes, each one confident. The medium cannot be corrected, so hesitancy shows, and asking for a small number of decisive marks gets closer than asking for skill.
