ARRI ALEXA 35

The ALEXA line is the body most drama is shot on, so its rendering has become what a modern film looks like. Nothing about the picture announces itself.

Skin is the reason. ARRI colour holds a face together across a wide range of light, so a person walking from shade into sun stays the same person.

The sensor is Super 35 sized, which puts depth of field close to what a 35mm film camera gave with the same lens.

ARRI rates the ALEXA 35 at 17 stops of dynamic range, so a window and a face can sit in one frame with detail in both.

The highlights roll rather than clip, which is the behaviour film had and most digital sensors did not, and it is the single biggest reason for the reputation.

Use it as the default for anything meant to look like current drama, commercials or a streaming series.

Skip it when the picture should look like a particular period or a particular fault. The body is chosen for being invisible.

A RED body resolves more pixels and renders a harder, more contrasted image. An ALEXA gives lower resolution and a gentler gradient.

35mm film adds grain and colour crosstalk that no sensor reproduces. The test is the texture in a flat area: moving grain is film, clean noise is digital.

ARRI shipped the ALEXA 35 in 2022, and the line before it carried a decade of features and television. It is the body a crew reaches for when nobody wants the camera to be a decision.

The model returns an over sharpened, over contrasted frame. Ask for gentle highlight rolloff and fine shadow texture.

The other failure is waxy skin. Say natural skin tone with pores visible, because smooth skin is the default failure of every model.
