Brazilian Tropicalia: Tropical colour, collage and psychedelia crashed together, deliberately and joyfully.

What it is for

Tropicalia was built on antropofagia, the idea of swallowing foreign culture and producing something Brazilian from it. The design does the same: pop, psychedelia and collage eaten and recombined.

That makes it the most generous style here. Almost anything can go in as long as the colour stays hot and the layers stay visible.

How it works

Mix media deliberately: cut-out photographs, hand-drawn lettering, painted banners and halftone dots in the same sheet, with hard cut edges between them.

Colour clashes on purpose and stays saturated: hot pink, lime, orange, turquoise. No muted tones anywhere.

Fill the sheet. Repeat elements pop-art style, curve the display lettering across the composition, and let the layers overlap rather than sit apart.

When to use it

Use it for a music festival, a carnival, a Brazilian or Latin night, a street party, a food festival, a dance event, a summer fundraiser.

Leave it alone for anything quiet or corporate. Tropicalia has one volume.

Told apart from its neighbours

Psychedelic sixties posters are drawn in one medium with melting type. Tropicalia mixes photography, paint and print.

Pop art takes commercial imagery and cleans it up. Tropicalia takes everything and leaves the seams showing.

Dada collage is grey, ironic and anti. Tropicalia is coloured, joyful and for.

Where it was used

Rogerio Duarte designed the key sleeves and posters, including Caetano Veloso's 1968 debut and the Tropicalia compilation. Helio Oiticica's installation gave the movement its name, and the military government exiled Veloso and Gil the following year.

The prompt

Replace the blanks with your own event, keep the rest. Then run it on an image model.

poster for <event>, Brazilian Tropicalia, cut-out photographic collage of tropical leaves parrots and faces mixed with hand-drawn psychedelic lettering, clashing saturated colour of hot pink lime orange and turquoise, halftone dots over the photographs, pop art repetition, a hand-painted banner element, layered elements with hard cut edges and no empty space, Portuguese-style display lettering curving across the sheet, <date, time and place> hand lettered in a curved band

Run it

What goes wrong

The model returns straight psychedelia. Ask for mixed media: cut-out photographs, halftone dots, hand-drawn lettering and painted elements in the same sheet with hard cut edges.

The second failure is a harmonious palette. Say the colours clash and stay fully saturated.

Leave out

restraint, muted colour, alignment, minimalism, single medium

Watch for

It must mix media. One medium alone is psychedelia or collage, not Tropicalia.
