What it is for
Taisho design is the moment Japan absorbed European modernism without losing its own visual language, and the collision is more interesting than either half.
The moga, the modern girl with a bob, is also one of the great poster subjects: recognisable, stylish and specific to a decade.
How it works
Put one stylish figure at the centre, usually a woman in a kimono with a bobbed haircut and a modern posture.
Print flat with fine outlines and a soft lithographic crayon texture, not the hard keyblock of a woodblock print.
Let Deco geometry structure the layout while Japanese pattern fills the background: stylised waves, kimono textile motifs. Palette of vermilion, mustard, jade and cream. Title in vertical Japanese characters styled geometrically, with a small Latin subtitle.
When to use it
Use it for a tea house, a jazz night, a vintage fair, a Japanese cultural event, a cocktail bar, a film season, a fashion event.
Leave it alone when you need to look contemporary. It is firmly of one decade.
Told apart from its neighbours
Art Deco proper is symmetrical, gold and Western. Taisho takes the geometry and puts Japanese pattern behind it.
Ukiyo-e is printed from blocks with a hard keyblock line and no Deco anywhere.
Shanghai yuefenpai is the Chinese contemporary, softer, airbrushed and selling products.

Where it was used
Takehisa Yumeji's illustrations and design shop defined the look between 1912 and 1926, and department stores such as Mitsukoshi printed the commercial version. The era ended with the Showa period and the militarisation that followed.

What goes wrong
The model returns a straight ukiyo-e print. Ask for 1920s lithographic printing with crayon texture and Art Deco geometry, not woodblock.
The second failure is a Western-only Deco poster. Say Japanese pattern fills the background and the title runs vertically in Japanese characters.

It is a hybrid, so both halves have to show: Deco geometry and Japanese pattern in the same sheet.
