What it is for
DEFA designers worked with almost no budget and no marketing department, so every poster had to survive on one idea. The results are startlingly modern.
The cheap stock and the limited inks also make the look easy to reproduce honestly, which is rarer than it sounds.
How it works
Reduce to one motif. A hand, a silhouette, a single object, held against a plain field.
Paint it flat by hand, with slightly uneven edges rather than vector precision. Three inks at most on cheap off-white paper.
Draw the title as a geometric sans in a single weight, and set the credits small in condensed type along the foot. A strong diagonal is the usual way the composition gets its energy.
When to use it
Use it for a film season, a documentary night, a political talk, a design lecture, a theatre run, a history event.
Leave it alone when you need warmth or abundance. The look is austere by construction.
Told apart from its neighbours
Polish posters are painterly and surreal. DEFA is flatter, more graphic and more restrained.
Soviet propaganda is rhetorical and heroic. DEFA is quiet and often ironic.
Swiss Style uses a grid and photography. DEFA is hand-painted and asymmetric by feel.
Where it was used
The DEFA studio in Babelsberg commissioned posters from 1946 to 1990, and because the films were not competing for an audience the designers were left alone. Werner Klemke and a long list of others produced work that is now collected more than the films are watched.
