CineStill 800T

CineStill 800T is the most recognisable colour stock of the last fifteen years, and one defect does all of it. Every bright light in the frame carries a soft red halo, so a street of neon signs comes back glowing.

It is also tungsten balanced, which means it is built for the colour of an indoor bulb. In uncorrected daylight everything cools down and the shadows go blue. Those two properties together give the look people ask for: cool blue night, warm lamps, red glow.

Put bright light sources in the scene and name them. Street lamps, neon, headlights, a shop window, a bulb in shot. Then say red halation glowing around each one.

Use the tungsten balance instead of fighting it. Say cool blue shadows and neutral skin under the warm practical lights. If the scene is in daylight, say the daylight comes back blue unless it is corrected.

Steer the three carriers. Skin stays neutral under a warm bulb and goes cool under uncorrected daylight. A daylight sky goes deep blue to cyan. Green foliage goes teal and blue-green rather than yellow-green.

Use it after dark: lit streets, bars, car parks, arcades, shop fronts, rain on tarmac, anything with a light source in the frame.

Leave it alone in flat daylight with no lamps. There is nothing to halate, the tungsten balance only makes the picture cold, and CineStill 50D is the right sibling for that scene.

CineStill 800T is Kodak Vision3 500T with the remjet backing removed and then rated at 800. Remjet is the black anti-halation layer on the back of a motion picture film, and it absorbs the light that passes through the emulsion. With the remjet gone, that light reflects off the film base and exposes the red layer a second time, so every bright highlight carries a red glow. Vision3 500T still has its remjet, so it shows no halation at all. That one missing layer is the whole difference between the two entries in this file.

CineStill 50D is the daylight balanced sibling: slower, finer grained, and with far less visible glow. Cinema publishes Halation and Light Leak at /techniques/cinema/ as separate entries. Halation there is the glow on its own, on any picture you like. This entry is the stock that produces the glow by accident, together with the tungsten balance and the cine grain.

The brothers Brandon and Brian Wright started CineStill in Los Angeles and funded the first production run on Kickstarter in 2012. They removed the remjet from Kodak Vision3 500T so the film could run through an ordinary C-41 lab instead of ECN-2 motion picture chemistry, and the halation came with it. The stock has carried the neon night look on record sleeves, music videos and photo books ever since, and the price has climbed every year since 2020.

The glow arrives as a red filter over the whole frame. Say the halation forms only around the bright light sources, and that the rest of the picture keeps normal colour.

The scene comes back warm and golden, because a model treats night as warm by default. Say tungsten balanced with cool blue shadows, and keep the warmth inside the lamps.
