What removing a photo background with AI costs

Cutting a background out of a photo costs two cents on Visual Sandbox. No plan, no credit pack, no monthly minimum. That single number changes the math on every product listing, thumbnail, or merch mockup that needs a clean cutout.

The flat rate

Remove Background runs on Recraft's cutout model. Drop in a photo, get back a transparent PNG of the subject: person, product, logo, animal. The price is $0.02 a photo, every time, regardless of volume. One image or a thousand, the per-photo cost never moves.

It handles the cases that trip up cheaper cutout tools: hair strands, animal fur, glass, semi-transparent objects, thin lines. It also works on AI-generated images, not just camera photos, which matters if the source shot came out of a generator in the first place.

What the subscription tools charge instead

remove.bg's own pricing page lists a one-off starter pack of 3 credits for $3, a dollar a photo with no subscription at all. Its cheapest monthly plan is $9 for 40 images, $0.225 a photo. Scale all the way to the top tier, 10,000 images for $989 a month, and the per-photo rate finally drops to about ten cents.

Service and plan Effective cost per image
Visual Sandbox, pay per image $0.02
remove.bg, one-off pack (3 credits for $3) $1.00
remove.bg, entry plan (40 images for $9 a month) $0.225
remove.bg, top plan (10,000 images for $989 a month) $0.099

Prices are live rates checked this session against each company's own pricing page.

That $0.099 is the best case for a subscription, and it's still five times the Visual Sandbox rate. It only gets there if you commit to processing 10,000 photos every month, whether you need that many or not.

Photoroom prices differently: it bundles cutouts into a broader design subscription rather than selling them by the image. Pro runs $12.99 a month, or $89.99 billed yearly, and background removal is one tool inside a suite that also does templates, batch editing, and marketplace exports. That's a fair trade if the templates are the reason you're paying. It's a bad trade if a clean cutout is the only thing you actually need, since the meter runs the same whether you process 5 images that month or 500.

When the subscription actually wins

Never, on price alone, for background removal specifically. Every remove.bg tier checked here costs more per image than the flat two cents, from the $3 starter pack up to the $989-a-month agency plan. The only reason to pick a subscription is the extra tooling wrapped around it: batch queues, brand templates, marketplace-ready exports built into the same product.

If the job is just "take the background off this photo," pay per image and skip the plan.

A typical batch

A small ecommerce seller processing 30 new product shots a week pays $0.60 on Visual Sandbox. The same 30 photos on remove.bg's entry subscription, 40 images for $9 a month, cost $9 whether they use all 40 slots or five. On the cheapest pay-as-you-go pack, the same 30 photos run closer to $30.

Pair it with a finish step

A cutout by itself is rarely the final asset. Paste the transparent subject onto a new background in an edit model, or run it through Upscale at $0.10 a photo if the listing needs a bigger file than the source supplied. Both steps stay flat-priced, so a full product shot, cutout to finished listing image, lands under fifteen cents.

The takeaway

A background removed from a photo is worth two cents, not a monthly plan. Pay per image, skip the subscription, and save the plan money for tools where the extra features actually earn it.
