What it is for
Y2K design is optimism about technology before anybody had reason to be suspicious of it. Everything is clean, glassy and slightly weightless.
It has also become genuinely fashionable again, so it reads as current and retro at the same time, which almost nothing else manages.
How it works
Chrome the lettering properly: mirrored reflections with a visible horizon line across the metal, dark below and light above.
Add translucent glassy blue panels with a soft inner glow, star lens flares on the highlights, and one swirling metallic blob.
Silver, ice blue and white with one lilac accent. Soft outer glow and drop shadows on everything, and a thin techno sans with wide tracking.
When to use it
Use it for a millennium or 2000s night, a tech event, a club night, a launch party, a games event, a fashion or beauty event.
Leave it alone when you want warmth. Everything here is cold and glossy.
Told apart from its neighbours
Rave flyers are neon on black and hand-assembled. Y2K is silver on white and rendered.
Vaporwave is nostalgic for the same period but deliberately degraded and melancholy. Y2K is confident and shiny.
Synthwave looks back to the 1980s, not the 2000s, and is built on a sunset and a grid.
Where it was used
Millennium branding across the whole of 1999 and 2000 is the source, and it survived in Windows XP and early Mac OS X interfaces. Pop artwork of the period, from Britney Spears to Blue, carried the same chrome and glass.

The prompt
Replace the blanks with your own event, keep the rest. Then run it on an image model.
poster for <event>, Y2K millennium style, liquid chrome lettering with mirrored reflections and a blue horizon line in the metal, translucent glassy blue panels with soft inner glow, star lens flares on the highlights, a swirling metallic blob shape, palette of silver ice blue white and one lilac accent, drop shadows and soft outer glow on everything, a thin techno sans with wide tracking, <date, time and place> inside a glassy pill-shaped panel
What goes wrong
The model returns flat grey type. Ask for liquid chrome with mirrored reflections and a visible horizon line in the metal.
The second failure is a matte finish. Say translucent glassy panels with inner glow, star lens flares and soft outer glow on everything.
Leave out
flat colour, matte surfaces, earth tones, texture, hand-drawn elements
Watch for
The chrome must reflect a horizon. Flat grey gradients read as metal-coloured, not as chrome.
