What it is for
Metal poster design is genre signalling at its most literal, and it is very good at it. Nobody has ever mistaken one of these for a folk night.
The logo tradition is also genuinely skilled work. A readable spiked blackletter wordmark is harder to draw than most people assume.
How it works
One airbrushed scene with hot rim light and deep black shadow. Skulls, chains, fire, a lone figure on a cliff, a sky doing something it should not.
Draw the name as a spiked blackletter or carved metal logo with a chrome bevel and a drop shadow. This is the centre of the design.
Black, charcoal, blood red and molten orange. Add an ornate symmetrical border, aged parchment or hammered metal texture, and the support acts small in condensed capitals.
When to use it
Use it for a metal or rock gig, a Halloween event, a tattoo convention, a beer launch, a horror screening, a games night.
Leave it alone for anything gentle. The style has exactly one register.
Told apart from its neighbours
Penny dreadful covers do the same melodrama a century earlier, engraved and printed badly.
Hong Kong film posters pack the sheet with faces rather than centring one scene.
Victorian broadsides use only type, where metal posters are built around the image and the logo.
Where it was used
Derek Riggs painted Eddie for Iron Maiden from 1980 and set the template for a decade. Pushead brought the ink-heavy version to Metallica and hardcore, and the tour poster tradition runs unbroken to the present.

What goes wrong
