What it is for
4AD sleeves work by withholding the subject rather than the information. You can read the words, but you cannot say what you are looking at, and that ambiguity is the mood the music had.
It is the most atmospheric style in this catalogue and the hardest to describe, which is why it is worth naming the method rather than the look.
How it works
Photograph something organic very close and slightly out of focus, so it cannot be identified. Fabric, water, wax, bone, plant matter.
Layer it: double exposure, translucent overlays, scratched and torn photographic texture between layers.
Desaturate to bone grey, sepia and faded green. Set the type small in a delicate letterspaced serif and let part of it dissolve into the image.
When to use it
Use it for an ambient or dream pop night, a poetry reading, an art film screening, a gallery, a dance piece, a meditation event.
Leave it alone when the event is practical. The whole style is mood and nothing else.
Told apart from its neighbours
Factory withholds information and keeps the image graphic. 4AD gives you the information and withholds the subject.
Grunge typography layers textures aggressively. 4AD layers them softly.
Surrealism paints one identifiable impossibility. 4AD makes sure you can never name the thing at all.
Where it was used
Vaughan Oliver and Nigel Grierson worked as 23 Envelope for 4AD from 1981, designing for the Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance and the Pixies. The house style was so consistent that people bought records by the sleeve.

The model returns a clear photograph of a recognisable object. Ask for an unidentifiable organic subject shot very close and slightly out of focus.
The second failure is crisp typography. Say the type is small, letterspaced and partly dissolved into the image.
