ACT UP: One accusation set in plain heavy type, on black, with a single graphic symbol.

What it is for

The Silence = Death poster works because it is an equation, not a plea. Three words and a symbol, set as plainly as a road sign, and unanswerable.

It also proves how far typography alone can go. There is no image, no illustration and no colour beyond one, and it is still the most reproduced activist poster of the last forty years.

How it works

Black background, nothing else. One short line in heavy plain sans capitals with wide letterspacing, centred.

One flat graphic symbol above the line. The inverted pink triangle is the original, reclaimed from the Nazi camp badge and turned point up.

One extra colour at most. Align everything exactly and leave real space around the type. A small block of explanatory text at the foot carries the detail.

When to use it

Use it for a campaign, a health event, a memorial, a Pride event, a fundraiser, a political meeting, a lecture.

Leave it alone for anything light. The form is confrontational and it takes a position.

Told apart from its neighbours

Brutalism is loud for its own sake. ACT UP is loud about something specific and is meticulously set.

Monochrome plus an accent is the same restraint without the accusation.

Swiss Style aligns as carefully but stays neutral, which is exactly what this refuses to do.

Where it was used

The Silence = Death Project made the poster in 1987 and ACT UP New York adopted it. The Gran Fury collective produced the rest, including Kissing Doesn't Kill in 1989, which ran on buses and was attacked for it.

The prompt

Replace the blanks with your own event, keep the rest. Then run it on an image model.

poster for <event>, ACT UP activist poster, pure black background with one short accusatory line set in heavy plain sans capitals with wide letterspacing, a single flat graphic symbol such as an inverted pink triangle centred above the line, no illustration and no photograph, one additional colour at most, absolute alignment and generous space around the type, a small block of explanatory text set very small at the foot, <date, time and place> in that small block

Run it

What goes wrong

The model adds an illustration. Say there is no illustration and no photograph, only type and one flat graphic symbol.

The second failure is gentle wording. Ask for one short accusatory line, set as an equation or a statement rather than a request.

Leave out

decoration, illustration, warm colour, multiple images, gentle wording

Watch for

The line has to be an accusation, not a description. That directness is the design.
