How is it different from Soviet propaganda?

It is brighter, glossier and always in motion. Soviet socialist realism tends to be static and monumental. The Korean version puts everybody mid-stride and pushes the colour much further.

Should I use it at all?

Only knowingly. It is the current visual language of a state that imprisons people, and it reads as a quotation. For satire, film seasons or a deliberate reference it is defensible. For a bake sale it is not.

What it is for

North Korean posters are the last large-scale hand-painted propaganda tradition still running, and the craft is genuinely high: the airbrush work and the colour control are exceptional.

For a poster, the useful part is the forward motion. Figures striding out of the sheet toward the viewer is a device almost nobody else uses.

How it works

Put the figures mid-stride, walking or running out of the sheet toward the viewer, faces up and forward.

Saturate past realism: glossy airbrushed skin, hot rim light, crimson dominant with sky blue and gold.

Run a rising diagonal from lower left to upper right and stream a banner or flag behind the figures. Slogan in bold block lettering across the top or bottom.

When to use it

Use it for a sports day, a fun run, a rally, a campaign launch, a satirical event, a film season about the region.

Leave it alone unless you know what you are quoting. This is the visual language of a state that imprisons people, and using it thoughtlessly on a bake sale is a bad look.

Told apart from its neighbours

Soviet socialist realism is more static and more sombre in palette. The Korean version is brighter, glossier and always moving.

Cuban posters are flat, printed and graphic rather than painted.

Hong Kong film posters share the airbrush but pack the sheet with faces rather than driving one diagonal.

Where it was used

Mansudae Art Studio in Pyongyang employs thousands of artists and produces the posters, murals and monuments, including commissioned monuments abroad. Nicholas Bonner's collections brought the poster work to Western attention from the 2000s.
