Sparks and Embers

Sparks put light inside the frame that moves. Each ember is a small source travelling on its own path, so the picture gains motion and brightness in the same element.

They also carry danger without showing it. A spark is evidence of something cutting, burning or breaking nearby, so the shot implies the event rather than staging it.

An ember reads as a short streak rather than a dot, because it moves during the exposure. Shutter angle sets the length of that streak, so a longer exposure gives you trails and a shorter one gives you points.

Contrast is everything. A spark is only as visible as the background is dark, and the same sparks against a bright wall read as dirt on the lens.

They arc and fall. Sparks follow gravity after the first moment, so a shot with embers flying flat across the frame forever looks wrong.

Use them around welding, forging, grinding, an impact, or a fire that has reached the stage of collapsing.

Skip them in daylight or against a pale set, because there is nothing for them to be bright against.

Dust motes hang in a beam and barely move. Sparks travel fast, glow on their own and fall. The test is whether the particle makes its own light.

Embers from a fire drift slowly upward on the heat. Sparks from a tool shoot out hard and then drop. Naming the source settles which one you get.

The sparks disappear, because a bright background swallows them. Say the background is dark and name the source the sparks come from.

The second failure is sparks that float like dust. Ask for fast movement, short bright trails, and a fall after the first arc.
