Dust Motes
Fine particles hang in a light beam and mark where the light travels.

What it is for
Dust motes make a room feel still. Nothing in the frame is moving except a few specks turning slowly in a shaft of light, and that is enough to say the air has been undisturbed for a long time.
They also prove the light is real. A beam drawn by particles has a source somewhere off frame, and the eye accepts the window or the gap in the curtains without being shown it.
How it works
They need a hard source and a dark surround. A shaft from a window into a shaded room is the standard setup, because the beam has an edge and everything outside it is dark enough for the specks to read.
The motes drift rather than fall. Movement comes from convection in the room, so it is slow, sideways and slightly random. Anything falling straight down reads as dirt on the sensor.
Density stays low by design. A few dozen visible particles is the look, and more than that becomes smoke.
When to use it
Use it for an attic, a church, a barn door, or any interior that should feel unentered.
Skip it in a scene with movement and moving air, because footsteps and doors would clear the beam in seconds and the shot would contradict itself.
Told apart from its neighbours
Volumetric light is the beam itself, made visible by whatever is in the air. Dust motes are the individual particles you can pick out inside it. If you can count them, you have motes.
Smoke fills the beam evenly and rolls. Motes leave the beam mostly clear and drift, and they need a hard source or nothing catches at all.
The prompt
Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.
dust motes drifting in the light around <subject>, particles catching a hard beam, slow suspended motion
What goes wrong
The beam arrives without particles. Soft even light gives the motes nothing to catch, so ask for a hard source and a shaded room around it.
The second failure is a snowstorm indoors. Say the particles are few and the drift is slow, or the model fills the beam and hands you smoke.
Leave out
clear air, heavy smoke
Watch for
It needs a hard light source. Soft light gives the motes nothing to catch.
