What it is for
Madhubani has the highest pattern density of anything in this catalogue, which makes it extraordinary at close range and still legible far away because the figures are so bold.
It is also a living tradition with real practitioners, so it is worth naming the region and, on a real commission, paying somebody who paints it.
How it works
Fill everything. Once the figures are drawn, every remaining gap gets dots, hatching, small flowers or wavy lines. Nothing is left blank.
Draw figures flat in profile with enormous fish-shaped outlined eyes, and put a heavy double outline around every form.
Use natural pigment colours: turmeric yellow, indigo, lamp black, brick red, leaf green. No shading and no perspective. Finish with a thick double-ruled border carrying its own repeating motif.
When to use it
Use it for a South Asian cultural event, a mela, a food festival, a wedding, a dance performance, a community celebration, a textile fair.
Leave it alone when you want restraint, and be honest about the borrowing: name the tradition rather than passing it off as a generic look.
Told apart from its neighbours
Fraktur is symmetrical and leaves paper showing. Madhubani fills every millimetre.
Rosemaling flows in scrolls and uses shaded brush strokes. Madhubani is flat with hard double outlines.
Warli, the other Indian folk style people confuse it with, is white stick figures on brown and is almost the opposite.

Where it was used
Women in the Mithila region of Bihar painted these on house walls for centuries before the drought of 1966 led to the work being put on paper for sale. Ganga Devi and Sita Devi are among the painters who took it international.

What goes wrong
The model leaves empty background. Say every empty space is filled with fine line pattern, dots, hatching and small flowers.
The second failure is a single thin outline. Ask for a heavy double outline around every form and enormous fish-shaped eyes.
